Principles of Good Video Design: Motion Graphics

Motion Graphics:

  1. Simple animated graphics can really make a video pop. Some suggestions that can be done with most video editing software:
  1. Fade in/out
  2. Grow/shrink in/out
  3. Blur in/out
  4. Bounce in, slide out (use this sparingly or for specific purpose)
  • Leave 5 seconds of blank lead space before and after your video content
  • Use transitions sparingly. There’s nothing wrong with the plain old “jump cut” but here are some other options:
  1. Dissolve (this can convey passage of time, so keep in mind)
  2. Zoom in/out
  3. Flash or lens flare
  4. Fade to black/white

In Conclusion:

If I could give one word of advice to a new video producer it would be to keep the aesthetics simple and elegant. Mixing too many colors, fonts and transitions is the mark of the amateur. By carefully choosing a few design elements and using them consistently throughout, you will be on the way to creating professional web video that people will watch.
